Navigating Love in Retirement
Singles Edition
In my newsletter, Navigating Love in Retirement: Keeping Your Relationship Strong, published on August 28th I promised an edition for my single readers. The Golden Bachelorette premiered on ABC last week (described by one NY Times interviewee as “as the romantic, geriatric ‘Hunger Games’ from hell”, but I found the first episode to be both endearing and hopeful - we’ll see how the season goes!), so the timing seems good. Plus, this is one of my favorite subjects as a happily divorced woman 🎉
First, a quick PSA 📣!
💡 Whether you're newly single or have been embracing solo living for years, there's much to celebrate about this chapter of life.
The Freedom of Flying Solo
Being single as we get older can be an incredibly liberating experience. It's a time to rediscover yourself, pursue passions, and create a life that's uniquely yours. Many individuals find that being single allows them to focus on personal growth, travel more freely, and cultivate deeper friendships. I am personally in a season of loving not having to compromise. Being single means you can do what you want to do when you want to!
Dating in the Digital Age
For those interested in romance, the dating landscape has evolved. Online dating has opened up new possibilities. There some apps specifically for people over 50, but I think there are plenty of matches for you on the mainstream apps. These platforms have made it easier to connect with like-minded individuals who share your interests and life experiences.
Navigating Dating Apps: Tips
As more of us embrace online dating, it's important to know how to make the most of these platforms. Here are some tips for using two of my favorite dating apps:
Hinge
This is my favorite dating app. You can set up a profile and just leave it. If someone “likes” you, you can get a notification and take it from there. Passive dating!
Be authentic in your profile. Hinge prompts encourage genuine responses, so use them to showcase your personality.
Use the "Most Compatible" feature, which suggests matches based on your preferences and activity.
Take advantage of the voice note feature to add a personal touch to your profile.
OKCupid
Answer as many profile questions as possible. This improves your match compatibility scores.
Use the "Intro" feature to send a message before matching, increasing your chances of connection.
Regularly update your profile to stay active in search results.
General Tips:
Be honest about your age and use recent photos (this is key 🗝️).
Don’t wait too long to set up an in-person meeting. Have a few text chats and maybe a phone call, and if you are feeling comfortable - meet! There is no substitute for an in-person chemistry check.
Stay safe by meeting in public places and informing a friend or family member of your plans.
Go ahead and Google (and don’t be shy about asking for their last name) - they are checking you out too, plus it’s good to confirm people are who they say they are! Pro tip: check out their LinkedIn profile 👀
Don't be discouraged by lack of immediate success. Finding the right connection takes time. It’s a numbers game.
Remember, these apps are just tools to help you connect with others. The key is to approach online dating with an open mind and a positive attitude. Whether you're looking for companionship, friendship, or romance, there's someone out there for everyone.
Spotting Scammers on Dating Apps
Unfortunately, when using dating apps, it's crucial to be vigilant and look out for these telltale signs of scammers:
Incomplete or vague profiles: Scammers often have minimal information in their bios and few photos.
Overly attractive or professional photos: If all their pictures look like model shots, be cautious.
Rapid escalation: They may try to move the conversation off the app quickly or profess strong feelings very early.
Inconsistent stories: Pay attention to details they share and look for contradictions.
Reluctance to video chat: Scammers often avoid video calls to hide their true identity.
Requests for financial assistance: This is a major red flag 🚩, regardless of the reason given.
Pressure to make quick decisions: They might create a sense of urgency around their requests.
Remember, legitimate users on dating apps are usually happy to take things slow and meet in person when both parties are comfortable. If something feels off, trust your instincts and proceed with caution. Don't hesitate to use the app's reporting features if you suspect someone is a scammer.
Meeting People in Real Life
While online connections are valuable, there's no substitute for face-to-face interactions. Here are some great ways to meet people in real life:
Join local clubs or groups: Look for book clubs, hiking groups, or hobby-based meetups in your area.
Attend community events: Farmers markets, local festivals, and town hall meetings are great places to connect with neighbors.
Take classes: Sign up for cooking classes, art workshops, or language courses at community colleges or local centers.
Volunteer: Local charities, animal shelters, and community organizations always need help.
Try group fitness classes: Yoga, tai chi, or water aerobics classes are excellent for meeting health-conscious peers.
Explore religious or spiritual communities: If you're inclined, places of worship often have social groups and activities.
Frequent local spots: Become a regular at a coffee shop, library, or park to naturally encounter familiar faces.
Remember, consistency is key. Regular attendance at these places and events increases your chances of forming meaningful connections. Don't be afraid to strike up conversations and follow up with people you meet. With a little effort and openness, you can build a vibrant social circle.
The Wisdom of Experience
As we age, we bring a wealth of life experience to our relationships. This can lead to more authentic connections and a better understanding of what we truly want in a partner. Many find that dating later in life is more enjoyable and less stressful than in their younger years.
Thriving Solo: A Life Well-Lived
💡 It's important to remember that a happy, fulfilling life doesn't require a romantic partner! Many individuals find deep satisfaction and joy in their solo journeys. Being single allows for unparalleled freedom to pursue personal passions, career goals, and self-discovery without compromise. You have the opportunity to build strong, diverse social networks, including deep friendships that can provide emotional support and companionship. Studies have shown that single people often have more active social lives and stronger connections with family, friends, and their communities. They also tend to be more self-reliant and resilient. Whether it's traveling the world, dedicating time to hobbies, or making a difference through volunteering, the single life offers endless possibilities for personal growth and fulfillment. Remember, happiness comes from within, and you have the power to create a rich, meaningful life on your own terms. Embrace your independence and the unique opportunities it brings – you might find that being single is not just okay, but truly wonderful ✨.
